The official currency of Brazil is the Real. The symbol of the Real is R$, with BRL also being used to distinguish it from other denominated currencies. Brazil issues paper currency and coins to pay for purchases, taxes, and debts.
Being manufactured by the Brazilian Mint, the Brazilian Paper currency comes in seven denominations. R$ 2, R$ 5, R$ 10, R$ 20, R$ 50, R$ 100, R$ 200. Brazil hasn’t issued R$ 1 banknotes since 2005.
In 2010, Brazil started to issue banknotes in different sizes with the aim of preventing forgery and also to make them easy to recognise, particularly for the blind and visually impaired. The Real banknotes are all different sizes (except for the 20 and 200 paper bills, which are the same size)
BRL is divided into 100 cents and its coins, which are also issued by the Brazilian Mint, come in five denominations: R$ 0.05, R$ 0.10, R$ 0.25, R$ 0.50 and R$ 1.00. 1 cent coins haven’t been issued since 2004.
International credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, shops, travel agencies, car rental companies, and other companies that provide services to tourists. For safety reasons, making most of your purchases with a credit card is recommended in order to avoid carrying large sums of cash with you. However, be aware that some street vendors or small shops in remote places may not accept credit cards, so carrying some cash with you is suggested.
